A few extra toes

A closer look at
polydactyl paws.

Polydactyl simply means having extra toes on one or more paws. Montclair is our polydactyl Maine Coon.

The little details

Extra toes are an inherited trait. They do not automatically indicate better quality, a particular personality, or better health.

Paws need attention

Check every toe and claw, including claws tucked between extra toes. Keep nails trimmed so they do not grow into the paw. Ask your veterinarian to demonstrate safe care and assess any discomfort or unusual growth.

Registration is separate

CFA’s Maine Coon registration rules provide for eligible polydactyl cats using separate registration codes. Eligibility depends on the cat’s documentation. Registration does not certify health or imply CFA endorsement.

Registration & the show standard

CFA’s Maine Coon show standard specifies five toes on the front paws and four on the back, and lists an incorrect toe count as a disqualification. Registration does not make a polydactyl cat eligible for standard Maine Coon Championship or Premiership competition. Ask CFA about the rules for any other class or event.
